A Message From Our 2020 Chairperson

From HYC's 2019 Annual Review

After two remarkable years of exponential growth, 2020 seems an appropriate time to reflect on the Howick Youth Council’s role in the community.

We set out to represent, develop and connect young people from across the Howick Local Board area and have made strong progress in these areas. Our success is testament to the principle of youth empowerment; when young people are given the right tools and an opportunity, they can see their goals and aspirations for tomorrow, delivered today.

The Howick Youth Council gives its members the tools they need to engage and empower young people. In 2020 and beyond, I see the youth council expanding its reach to also give these tools to other young East Aucklanders. We hope this can empower them to act too, with their own ideas, to improve our communities.

This concept is something that has proven to work effectively in 2019. We supported our local college prefects in delivering the East Auckland Schools Charity Concert. The event celebrated our community’s talented performers and raised money for the valuable work of mental health trust I Am Hope.

Alongside new connections, I’m looking forward to continuing our valuable partnership with Te Tuhi as the home of the youth council. Also essential is the Howick Local Board, without which the Howick Youth Council couldn’t exist. I hope their support will continue to expand in 2020 so we can do more for East Auckland’s youth.

I’m also looking forward to the second year of collaboration with Jack Collins. Continuity in leadership is a critical quality on youth councils, and so I’m excited to share another year with Jack.

Finally I’d like to welcome our new members for 2020. You’re about to join a challenging yet rewarding activity. The youth council starts as a co-curricular, but by the end it’ll be a family for you. The best advice I have is the simplest — the more you put into the Howick Youth Council, the more you’ll get out of it.

Ngā mihi nui,

Ben Fraser
